The Story of TROY

For more than a century, TROY has grown from a small teacher-training school in Alabama into an institution with a reach that extends around the world. Founded on February 26 1887 as Troy State Normal School, the University began with a focused mission: preparing educators to serve Alabama's schools. Over time, that mission expanded alongside the needs of its students and communities.

From educating returning veterans after World War II and building a lasting relationship with the United States military to establishing campuses across Alabama and partnerships abroad, TROY's history is one of growth, adaptation, and service. Today, TROY's story connects its historic roots in Troy with a much broader mission. What began as an institution dedicated to preparing teachers has developed into a university serving students across disciplines, campuses, states, and countries. All while carrying forward a tradition of education that began in 1887.
