ACCESS

ACCESS Virtual Learning (Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide) is an initiative of the Alabama Department of Education. Its primary goal is to provide high-quality instruction and improve student achievement through virtual learning opportunities. With over 120 classes offered, ACCESS provides the entire high school curriculum at no cost to Alabama public schools. There are 30,000 students across the state of Alabama who are currently taking classes through ACCESS.

Mission Statement

Empower Alabama students through access to high-quality virtual learning opportunities, supported by expert instruction, flexible pathways, and strong partnerships, preparing them for success in a future-ready world.

Vision Statement

Every Alabama student benefits from access to high-quality, innovative virtual learning that expands opportunities and supports multiple pathways to success.

History

In 2004, Governor Bob Riley established a task force to improve educational opportunities for public schools that struggled to hire teachers and offer a broad range of electives. This effort led to the creation of ACCESS (Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide), a virtual learning program that combines teacher-led instruction with online and videoconferencing technologies. The program is overseen by the Alabama State Department of Education and supported by three regional centers responsible for teacher support and school assistance.
